The Best In The World

One of my favorite books of all time is Seth Godin’s The Dip. Essentially, it is a book about quitting and why it is okay to quit. However, there is one part of the book dedicated to being one thing – The Best In the World. It basically says that you have to measure yourself by one standard, being the best in the world. If a course of action does not lead you to be the best in the world, then you have to discontinue that route and focus on what will make you the best in the world.

I reviewed all the work I had done for the past six months. I have made hundreds of blog posts, thousands of tweets, innumerable lines of copy. Some are gems but most are trash. I am still learning. I am making mistake upon mistake and there are days when I think I cannot write another word. It has been rough. It has not been smooth sailing.

Every day, I make one more step forward, one more step into the unknown. It scares me. It frightens me because I see what it may entail. It frightens because I know I will fail at some point, my knees would buckle, my resolve would be shaken and I would be as lost as when I started. It is going to be rougher. It is going to hurt more when I get rejected over and over again. It is going to take years and years of sleepless nights and I will agonize over every little detail.

That being said, I know now what I want to be. For the first time in my life I’m doing something that I think is worthwhile. I want to be the best in the world. I want to write the Great Filipino novel. I want to win that Booker prize.

I WANT TO BE THE BEST WRITER ON THE WORLD.
